Project III- Travelling to the Finish in Pairs........

Project III…Travelling to the Final Stretch in Pairs

Project III’s direction is product design driven. In keeping with our theme of travel this last project is a team initiative.

Pairs of (your choosing) will produce 6 concept sketches and 1 prototype of an article of travel

The pairs should have a discussion about what travel means to each of them. Communication is key in-group work.

The themes of the concepts may draw inspiration from Project I and from Project II or if your team is very organized a combination of both from each team-member providing a very directional narrative to the concept of travel and arrival in space and time….

Materials for Prototype- Paper, glue, tape, staples…no wire, no plastic -Color, pattern are allowed the prototype must fit on your desk and be no larger than a toaster or a large shoe box…it can have several elements, and objects, made of paper placed in it to give scale and realism…

CLEAN! Effective, documented process and of course WELL-CRAFTED work is the goal….

Run Week-
July 16th Introduction to project and formation of teams- Start team concept development
(homework look at information posted on the blog dated July 11, Design Inspirations Paper Studies and look on Youtube for Origami techniques, see what you find  and use this as another form to solve concept drawings in perspective and technical documentation of an form as well as ideas for prototype solutions)

July 18th Work in Studio- and first round of presentations to class.

Drawing Exercise: Gesture

To capture gesture, don’t draw what the thing looks like, or even what it feels like… Instead draw what it’s doing. For example (when drawing a figure): if the figure bends down to pick up an object - record the twist of the torso, the reaching of the arm.

As the model takes the pose, or as the people you watch move, you are to draw, letting your pencil swing around the paper almost at will, being impelled by the sense of action you feel. Draw rapidly and continuously in a ceaseless line, from top to bottom, around and around, without taking your pencil off the paper. Let the pencil roam, reporting the gesture.  (taken from Nicolaides, The Natural Way To Draw)
