Project II Afternoon Timeline and Guidelines.....

‘A Cloaking Garment’
Project II- Set Within a Room in
The Wrightsman Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Project II is inspired by the French decorative arts from the 18th century.
-In 2007, the thirteen Wrightsman Galleries for French decorative arts underwent extensive renovations to improve the presentation of the Museum's renowned collection of French furniture and related decorative arts pieces—many of which have a royal provenance. All of the eighteenth-century boiseries, as well as many objects, received conservation treatment, and a set of seat furniture was reupholstered with a modern re-creation of the original embroidered show covers. The galleries include a number of important works previously not on view, including a mid-seventeenth-century carved ebony cabinet on a stand and a late-eighteenth-century carved and gilded state bed, as well as additional pieces of Sèvres porcelain and gold snuff boxes.
Renovations to the galleries included the repainting of the paneling in one of the period rooms, the conservation treatment of a large group of objects, and the reupholstering of several pieces of furniture with modern re-creations of their original show covers.

Metropolitan Museum – Wrightsman Galleries Assignment – Tuesday July 9, 2013
Take your time strolling through the galleries; allow your eyes to adjust to the dim glow of each room. Realize that you are being taken on a stylistic journey through French aristocratic style, from the age Louis XIV- Louis XVI. Take note of the stylistic changes of each room.
Color, the look and details of the furniture, the carpets, wall treatments, china, silver…. etc.
These elements will be the inspiration for project II.

In the same feeling of travel and location, project II will also transport us to another location this time the element is in time.

During your time at the Met this afternoon choose a room you like best and sketch 6- 7 elements from the room make sure to label them, take notes about the room (colors, finishes, placement of objects) take notes from the museum labels, make decoration notes.

Feel free to document the entire room in a sketch or sections of the room and specific details….
Yes- you may photograph without a flash but you will quickly see that sketching is a much better method.

 Wednesday July 10- Homework/ Class
The sketches you create will inform ‘A Cloaking Garment’.
·       A cloaking garment is a silhouette of your choice that blends in with the environment and acts like camouflage….
·       You also have the option of designing a garment which is a total opposite of the environment a stand alone garment which has a more performative/installation feel in the space
·       Either of these choices must exhibit a strong concept statement about the body in a particular environment …  think about deportment?
·       Think of your model leaning against the wall, seated in a chair, lying on the floor, hiding in a corner, lounging on the floor, Kneeling in the middle of the room etc

This is a garment to be rendered in a series of concept sketches (4-5) and a 3-D form, made out of paper- plastic- found materials

Thursday July 11 Continue to Complete Concept Sketches
